Solar Car Ports Save £100k & Cut CO2: East Riding Leisure Centres Go Green (2026)

East Yorkshire's Green Energy Revolution: Solar Canopies for Leisure Centre Car Parks

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is embarking on an ambitious project to transform leisure centre car parks into sustainable powerhouses. By installing solar-powered canopies at five council-owned leisure centres in Beverley, Bridlington, Hornsea, Driffield, and Pocklington, the council aims to achieve a dual goal: reducing its electricity bills and cutting carbon emissions.

The proposed solar canopies, known as carports, are expected to save the council approximately £100,000 annually in electricity costs. This significant savings potential is attributed to the ability of solar panels to harness the sun's energy, generating clean electricity. Over the next 25 years, these carports are projected to reduce CO2 emissions by a substantial 426 tonnes.

Councillor Paul West expressed enthusiasm for this innovative approach to sustainability, stating, 'This scheme is a brilliant way to reduce our carbon footprint while making the most of our existing council facilities.' The initiative not only showcases the council's commitment to environmental responsibility but also highlights the practical application of renewable energy sources in everyday settings.

This project serves as a testament to the potential of solar energy in urban environments, demonstrating how innovative solutions can contribute to both financial savings and environmental sustainability. As East Yorkshire embraces this green energy revolution, it sets a positive example for other local authorities and communities seeking to reduce their environmental impact.
