Despite his vocal prowess, Ellis was not accepted into the Musical Theatre program, leading him to major in vocal music education with the intention of becoming a teacher, following in his parents' footsteps.
However, Ellis's love for performing remained strong. He actively participated in various organizations, including University Sing and Scandals, and even took on a student group production of 'Rent' during his freshman year. It was during his sophomore year that Ellis experienced a pivotal moment in his career. The College of Fine Arts produced 'The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber,' directed by Hugh Wooldridge, a personal friend of Lloyd Webber and a director on the West End.
The audition process for this production was intense, with Ellis describing a high-pressure environment. Despite the challenges, Ellis's dedication and talent shone through, setting a high bar for his future endeavors. Wooldridge, impressed by Ellis's performance, invited him to perform in London, a testament to his 'it' factor.
Navigating the Performing Arts Landscape
After graduating from OU, Ellis pursued a master's degree in adult and higher education with a student affairs emphasis, seemingly moving away from the performing arts. However, his love for the stage never truly left him. He embarked on a cruise ship show for six weeks before returning to Oklahoma to work at the Health Science Center, planning Camp Blue Hawk, a summer camp for kids with Type 1 diabetes.
The performing arts landscape was in flux due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ellis seized the opportunity, landing his first show in the pandemic as a filmed version of 'Songs For A New World' in DC, playing the role of Man 1. This marked a turning point, as performing started to resume, albeit in a different format.
Rising to the Challenge
Since then, Ellis has been a part of numerous productions, including the second national tour of 'Waitress,' 'Smokey Joe's Cafe' in Connecticut, and the 50th anniversary North American Tour of 'Jesus Christ Superstar,' where he played Judas. His versatility and talent have led to a unique role as a principal standby in 'Hamilton,' where he knows four roles and is learning a fifth.
