Adelaide Man's Steam Locomotive Journey: From Dream to Reality (2026)

An Adelaide man's homemade steam locomotive, a 23-year labor of love, is set to join the Pichi Richi Railway fleet. Glen Smythe from Ironbank crafted every part from raw materials, based on a 1982 design. He embarked on this project as an engineering challenge, but it soon became a psychological test of endurance. Mr. Smythe's locomotive will now embark on a 350-kilometer journey to Quorn, the base of the heritage Pichi Richi Railway, where it will haul passengers on the much-loved route. Despite the completion of the locomotive, Mr. Smythe's work isn't done yet, as he still needs to build the boiler. This ambitious endeavor has kept him occupied for a quarter of a century, and he's ready to move on to the next phase of his passion project.
